Synopsis

This book examines how authors have used characters with disabilities to elicit emotional reactions in readers; additionally, how writers use disabilities to present individuals as "the other" rather than simply as people. Finally, the book discusses how literature has changed, or is changing, with regards to its presentation of those with a disability.

About The Author

Dr. Miles Beauchamp is an Assistant Professor of Communications in Alliant School of Management and Hufstedler School of Education at Alliant International University. His research is in social media for enterprise and the professions, mass media social communications, and the portrayal of individuals with disabilities in American Literature. He is Associate Editor and system-wide columnist at the Asian Journal, an English-language, pan-Asian newspaper, blogs at It's Just (all of) Us at milespb.com

Dr. Wendy V. Chung is an Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Integrated Marketing Communications program in Alliant School of Management at Alliant International University. She has extensive experience in marketing communications and co-founded and managed a Public Relations agency. Dr. Chung received her M.A. and Ph.D. in Organizational Communication from Howard University.

Dr. Alijandra Mogilner has taught at the University of California, San Diego, Alliant International University and currently is an adjunct professor at Webster University. She is the author of Children's Writer's Word Book published by Writer's Digest Books and an ESL self-teaching book used in South Korea, China, and several countries in Africa. She is the author of three novels, six nonfiction books and has been published in 37 languages. She wrote regularly for Children's Television Workshop in the 1980s and 90s, as well as hundreds of magazine articles.

Svetlana (Lana) Zakinova, MA is a freelance writer and editor. She writes and edits books, eBooks, articles, and other print and online media. Svetlana holds an M.A. degree in International Affairs, a B.A. in Psychology, and speaks fluent Russian.
